Along the way, you’ll hike to ancient fortresses, explore archaeological wonders, wander old towns, and taste regional specialties that make every stop memorable.

No, seriously, this route blends Greece’s greatest historical treasures with lesser-known landscapes that always surprise and inspire.
Should shoulder-season be your now? Absolutely. Shoulder-season travel in spring or fall unlocks the best of Greece: cooler hiking temperatures, colourful hillsides, easier driving, and fewer crowds.

Route Overview
This itinerary follows a roughly circular route through mainland Greece, allowing travellers to experience the country’s diversity without excessive backtracking.
The journey begins in Athens – the heart of Attica, Greece – where you immerse yourself in Greece’s ancient and modern capital before picking up a rental car and heading into Central Greece. From there, you travel to Delphi, perched dramatically on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, before continuing north to the awe-inspiring monasteries of Meteora.
From Meteora, the route moves west toward Ioannina and the mountainous region of Epirus, where alpine scenery, river gorges, and remote villages reveal a side of Greece many travellers never expect.
The road then curves south into the Peloponnese, perfectly punctuated with stops at Ancient Olympia, Kalamata, Mystras, Monemvasia, and Nafplio—each offering a distinct blend of history, culture, and landscape.
Finally, the trip loops back toward Athens with a stop at Mycenae – a major centre of Greek civilization – tying together the journey’s archaeological and outdoor adventure narrative.

Driving distances are generally reasonable, and every move day offers optional historical or scenic detours. Instead of racing through destinations, you’ll stay at least two nights in each major stop—often three—allowing time to settle in, explore deeply, and enjoy the rhythm of the road.

Day-by-Day Mainland Greece Itinerary Breakdown
Days 1–3: Athens
Begin in Athens, where feet hit cobblestones, tile and pavement as you wander through the neighbourhoods and explore world-famous landmarks first-hand. You’ll want to visit the Acropolis early to avoid crowds – book your entry ahead of time! Same for wandering through the Ancient Agora, and that’ll give you the afternoon to hike up Lykavittos Hill – or take the funicular – for sweeping city views. Days 4–5: Delphi
Drive to Delphi, truly one of Greece’s most atmospheric archaeological sites – and another of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites we visited on this trip. Ancient Greeks considered it the centre of the world. All we know is that the mountain setting makes Delphi unforgettable. Start early, head uphill and then savour a slow walk through the sanctuary from top to bottom, beginning at the stadium before descending through temples and treasuries in search of the oracle. And don’t miss the museum!

Days 6–8: Meteora
Meteora – “suspended in air” – combines spiritual history with outdoor adventure. Hike the hills and valleys between monasteries perched atop towering rock pillars before heading underground to the Cave of Theopetra for a glimpse into prehistoric life and ancient human footprints. Yes, it’s a UNESCO WHS!

Days 9–11: Ioannina & Epirus
Head west to Ioannina and the rugged mountains of Epirus. Stop off in the Metsovo on the drive and discover a hidden pocket of Vlach culture. Day 16: Mystras

Day 17: Monemvasia
Explore Monemvasia on foot— or take the bus to the old town – and head up to the castle. If wander all the way to the citadel sitting on top, head back along the sea path back to the causeway and new town. This fortified rock island is one of the trip’s most atmospheric places to explore the past.

Days 18–20: Nafplio
Slow down in Nafplio, one of Greece’s most elegant – if aging – towns. Visit not one, not two but three castles! Yes – Palamidi Castle, Bourtzi Fortress, and the remains of Akronafplia are waiting for you to explore their scenic treasures. Use the town as a base to enjoy both coastal beauty and neighbouring historic sites.

Day 21: Mycenae & Return to Athens
Before departure, stop at Mycenae to walk among the ruins of one of the great Bronze Age civilizations. From the Lion’s Gate to the Treasury of Atreus – this site is monumental. This last UNESCO World Heritage site is a fitting historical finale before returning to Athens.

Best Archaeological Site: Delphi
Delphi feels magical in a way few sites do. Its mountainside location, clear pathways, and layered ruins invite slow exploration. Start at the stadium to avoid crowds and descend at your own pace, taking hidden side trails—including the often-missed aqueduct.
Favourite Hike: Paliokastro (Nestor’s Castle)
This was a true walk on the wild side of history—combining sweeping coastal views, rugged trails, and castle ruins in one unforgettable experience. Plus, any hike that ends going downhill to water before the car is a boon!
Most Scenic Drive: Kalarrytes & Syrrako
The mountain roads into these villages were jaw-dropping. Deep gorges, towering peaks, and blue rivers created landscapes we never expected in Greece.
Most Surprising Stop: Nafpaktos
Scenic, historic, and easy to explore beyond the harbour. Climb old walls, discover hidden fountains, and wander beneath ancient trees.
Best Overnight Stay: Monemvasia
A quiet, walkable base with spacious accommodation—but the unexpected highlight was stepping outside when hearing music and discovering a local marching band leading a “Make a Wish” procession through town. I wish more people could experience the area’s local charm!
Greece Mainland Road Trip Planning Advice
We prefer to stay just outside city centres when possible – properties on the edge of town often provide easier parking, quieter surroundings, and kitchenettes for preparing simple meals. Our travel style – whether in Portugal or Scotland or Holland – is on the cheaper side, preferring simple accommodations that provide the basics with the option to make our own meals if we choose. That’s our choice, it may not be yours. Choose the type of accommodation that works for you and your budget.
If you’re of a similar mind to us, add a sink stopper and sharp travel-safe knife (and possibly a folding flipper) to your packing list. They make kitchenette stays far easier. For some reason, these three things were often missing from reasonably well-provisioned kitchens. And be sure to pick up a cardboard box to use for carrying dry goods.
Driving
Driving in Greece requires confidence, especially in historic towns with narrow streets and limited parking. Choose compact vehicles, don’t rely completely on GPS (staircases sometimes show up as roads) and expect occasional surprises – such as a sheep or cattle being driven towards you on the road.
Road conditions vary. Highways are generally excellent, while mountain roads can be steep, winding, and dramatic. Always build extra time into scenic routes.

Other planning notes
Book major attractions like the Acropolis in advance, especially important for all timed-entry sites.
Review your dates with a list of national and regional holidays. If there is a holiday during your stay, you will want to make sure that your accommodation is booked well in advance.
Note that most historic sites and all grocery stores will be closed on holidays (and almost all stores close on Sundays).
