10 Reasons Active Adventures are Good for You

We recently returned from a four-night, five-day canoe trip with a group of friends. Some days were slow and challenging. Others delivered the kind of moments that stay with you long after the gear is packed away—a perfect rainbow stretching across the lake while loons call and a lone beaver swims by. Or an evening spent sharing a campsite with a father-and-son duo celebrating their tenth year of outdoor adventures in this same spot together.

Their trip looked completely different from ours, but that was part of the lesson. Active outdoor travel adventures aren’t really about checking destinations off a bucket list. They’re about experiences, connections, and stories. They challenge your body, engage your mind, connect you with nature, and often introduce you to people who leave a lasting impression.

Whether you’re paddling through a remote wilderness area, hiking to ancient ruins, cycling a scenic trail, or exploring a historic town on foot, active travel has a way of changing you. It gets you moving, pushes you beyond your comfort zone, and often leaves you feeling more alive than any all-inclusive resort ever could.

Over the years, we’ve discovered that our most memorable adventures weren’t necessarily the biggest or the most expensive. They were the moments spent hiking among ancient petroglyphs, paddling beneath towering canyon walls, or cycling through landscapes that tell stories thousands of years old.

Here are ten reasons active outdoor travel adventures are good for you.

Getting Active Outdoors

It can seem daunting to plan an outdoor adventure – where should we go, what gear do we need, how hard is it going to be? Luckily, you’re in the right spot. Here at TimeTravelTrek, this is our sweet spot. We find the places, take the adventures and then share all the details so that you can get out and experience it for yourself.

There are a range of adventures from exploring small town history while RVing to setting out on an outdoor adventure trip with friends to Haida Gwaii (on British Columbia’s West Coast) to an 8-day canoe adventure to tips on flying with camping gear for an extended journey.

Your active adventures won’t look the same as ours – and they shouldn’t. Think of this blog as the springboard for your dive into adventure. It’s a place to get the wheels in motion – whether it’s inspiration or nitty-gritty specifics that you need.

Why bother taking the effort of planning any of these adventures in the first place?

Well, I can give you 10 good reasons.

1. Active Adventures Clear Your Mind

When life becomes noisy, nature provides an escape.

Something remarkable happens when you leave behind notifications, deadlines, and daily routines. Whether you’re hiking a desert trail or paddling across a quiet lake, your attention naturally shifts to the present moment.

During our canoe trip down Utah’s Green River, the constant demands of everyday life disappeared. The rhythm of paddling, watching the canyon walls change colour throughout the day, and camping beside the river created space to simply think—and sometimes not think at all.

2. Active Adventures Help You Discover What You’re Capable Of

Many adventures begin with uncertainty.

Can I hike that far? Or paddle that distance? Can I navigate a foreign city or unfamiliar trail system?

The answer is often yes.

A visit to Bandelier National Monument involved climbing ladders into cliff dwellings and exploring narrow canyon trails. What looked intimidating from a distance became one of the most rewarding experiences of the trip.

3. Active Adventures Relieve Stress Naturally

Research continues to show that time spent outdoors can reduce stress and improve overall well-being.

But you don’t need a scientific study to tell you how good it feels to stand beside a mountain lake, watch wildlife from a kayak, or hike into a sun-dappled forest.

Places like Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park offer exactly that kind of reset. The combination of fresh air, physical movement, and beautiful scenery creates a powerful antidote to stress.

4. Active Adventures Create Stronger Memories

Think about your favourite travel memories.

Chances are they involve doing something rather than simply seeing something.

I’ve long admired the work of the Group of Seven artists who painted in Killarney Provincial Park. But the moment we finally put paddles in the water the images of wind-swept jack pines, distant hills of white quartzite and red granite dipping into indigo water were seared in my mind.

You may not remember every museum exhibit or roadside attraction, but you’ll remember the excitement of spotting wildlife on a remote trail or the effort it took to reach a spectacular viewpoint.

5. Active Adventures Connect You to History in a Meaningful Way

History feels different when you’re standing where it happened.

Walking through ancient ruins, exploring archaeological sites, or hiking to remote petroglyph panels transforms history from something you read about into something you experience.

At Three Rivers Petroglyph Site in New Mexico, thousands of carvings spread across a rocky hillside. Seeing them required walking the trail, climbing among the rocks, and taking the time to observe details that photos simply can’t capture.

6. Active Adventures Build Resilience

Not every adventure goes according to plan.

Weather changes. Trails close. Equipment breaks. Wrong turns happen.

Yet those challenges often become the stories we tell later.

Multi-day canoe trips are especially good teachers. Wind, changing river conditions, and unexpected obstacles require problem-solving and adaptability. Canoe portages become not so pretty. Every challenge overcome becomes proof that you can handle more than you imagined.

The confidence gained outdoors often carries into everyday life.

7. Active Adventures Encourage Curiosity

One trail often leads to another.

A single scenic road trip sparks plans for the next adventure. One historic site inspires research into a forgotten culture… oh, don’t get me started on the Ancestral Puebloans and the remnants of the culture that can be discovered throughout the American Southwest!

Curiosity grows when you’re exposed to new places and experiences.

Our travels through Greece, for example, began with an interest in ancient history but quickly expanded into learning about local traditions, cuisine, architecture, and modern culture while hiking still into the past.

Adventure keeps you asking questions—and that’s a good thing.

8. Active Adventures Introduce You to Interesting People

Active travellers tend to share stories.

Whether it’s fellow hikers on a trail, paddlers around a campsite, RVers at a campground, or local guides sharing their knowledge, some of the best parts of travel involve human connection.

I didn’t include a writeup about the octogenarian solo camper set up next to us in the Yukon’s Conrad Campground near Carcross, but the memory of her walking into our site with a request for help to set up her campstove and then learning about her life in a nearby cabin without running water and relying on wood heat – is one we revisit often!

We’ve received hidden-gem recommendations from campground neighbours, historical insights from local volunteers, and practical advice from complete strangers who quickly became part of the adventure.

9. Active Adventures Improve Physical Health Without Feeling Like Exercise

Can I tell you a secret?

I hate the idea of exercise.

Okay, maybe hate is too strong of a word, but the idea of following a “workout” schedule or counting steps is right up with there with not eating carbs.

One of the greatest benefits of active outdoor travel is that movement becomes part of the experience.

You’re hiking up some serious elevation gain because there’s an exquisite turquoise-coloured alpine lake ahead.

The reason you’re paddling hard against the wind is because there’s a canyon around the next bend waiting to be explored.

You’re cycling up that never-ending hill because the ride down is going to be… yahoo!

Instead of exercising for the sake of exercise, you’re moving with purpose.

Before you know it, you’ve walked 15 kilometres through Athens, paddled several hours downriver, or spent an entire day exploring trails without ever thinking about counting steps.

10. Active Adventures Leave You Renewed

Perhaps the greatest benefit of all is renewal.

After a meaningful adventure, you return home feeling different.

Not because your life has changed dramatically, but because you’ve stepped outside your routine long enough to gain perspective.

A few days hiking, paddling, cycling, or exploring historic landscapes can restore energy, spark creativity, and remind you what matters most.

The adventure eventually ends, but the benefits often stay with you long after you’ve unpacked your gear… and like paddling the Oldman River, you can’t wait to do it all over again.

What Are You Waiting For?

You don’t always need months off work or a massive travel budget to enjoy the benefits of active outdoor travel adventures.

Start small.

Take a day trip to a nearby historic site. Explore a new hiking trail. Paddle a local lake. Cycle a scenic pathway you’ve never ridden before.

The goal isn’t necessarily to travel farther. It’s to engage more deeply with the places you visit.

Because some of life’s greatest rewards aren’t found sitting still—they’re discovered one trail, one paddle stroke, and one adventure at a time.
