Adventures kayaking the Sea of Cortez
When friends suggest a short 3-day kayaking trip along the coastline south from Playa Ligüi in the Sea of Cortez, you say “yes” and “when” even before you begin to wonder what it will entail.
Sea kayaking along Baja’s coastline is a dream trip for many paddlers. The rugged Giganta Mountains fall into the deep blue sea. Wildlife abounds – both in the ocean and on land – from dolphins to eels, coyotes to cormorants. Wind tests and teases. Morning sunrises cause jaws to drop, and evening stars beg to be watched.
There are early morning fishing adventures and afternoon walks in the desert. Seashells need admiring and turtle shells need discovering. Evening meals need devouring and campfires need enjoying.
Without a doubt, kayaking the Sea of Cortez is a bucket list adventure.
Inspiring a kayaking trip in the Sea of Cortez
This post is a little different than most. Rather than tell you about the experience, I’m going to inspire you with pictures – a little kayak trip photojournalism, if you will – in a slideshow. Whether this inspires you book a trip or simply makes you appreciate travelling vicariously from the comfort of your home, my job is done.
Enjoy!
When you go
Playa Ligüi is just over half an hour drive – 21 mi/34 km – south of Loreto. While we did our trip with friends who have the knowledge and gear, we highly recommend checking out one of the reputable kayaking adventure companies in Loreto or La Paz for your first visit.
Try Paddling South or Mar y Aventuras for guided trips. Dave Eckardt’s Guide to Baja Sea Kayaking is a valuable guide for trip planning.
