How to Cozy Up Your RV
When the “Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living” came out in 2017 it was a smash hit – and for a reason. Hygge (pronounced hue-guh) is a Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of coziness and comfortable warmth with feelings of wellness and contentment. We all want that feeling. The best part is that you can attain this relatively easily.
After three straight months of travel as snowbirds exploring the American Southwest, we took a couple of months off to get life in order back home. Our first trip out in the trailer to Police Outpost Provincial Park back in Alberta made me realise we were well on our way to creating this cozy RV lifestyle!
How Can You Make Hygge Work With Your RV Lifestyle?
How can you make it work for your RV lifestyle without breaking the bank? Hygge is a sense of comfort, togetherness, and well-being. It’s an experience most RVers are already know.
When you live in a tiny home on wheels where space is limited, you make every inch count. Life becomes less about material possessions and more about creating feelings, experiences, and memories. The coziness of hygge isn’t something that can’t be bought, but it can be nourished.
Add Texture
When we bought our “new-to-us” R-pod trailer the first thing I did was create a cozy nest for sleeping. I re-sewed our old king-sized comforter cover to make it work for the queen-sized down comforter in the trailer. The fabric is a calming ecru colour with plenty of texture.
I took throw pillows we already had and covered them with a pair of burnt orange coloured bamboo fabric pillowcases found on sale. In the same discount area, I found a plush, light brown “sheepskin” throw pillow and a brown and beige cashmere blanket.
Hygge is not only about how things look but also how they feel. Running your hands over a plush “sheepskin” pillow? That’s hyggelig. The feel of a cashmere throw? Hyggelig.
Creating Comfortable Nooks
Pillows and blankets add texture, depth and colour to warm up any space. Likewise, strings of twinkling lights and candles – avoid open flames in small spaces like RVs and use battery-operated candles – create an immediate sense of coziness.
Create a little nook – or hyggekrog – for curling up to read your favourite book. I found six identical embroidered feather throw pillows in the bargain bin of a furniture store and used them for the back rest on the couch in our trailer. Just add a cup of hot tea in your favourite ceramic mug and you have the perfect book-reading nook!
Cosy up Outdoors in Your Campsite!
Nature plays a huge role in creating a warm, comfortable experience – especially when you snuggle up in a chair by the fire with a warm drink. Sitting by a fire is the ultimate in comfort.
While I love the sound of a crackling fire, I don’t like coming back into a small space smelling of smoke. If you’re like me, consider buying a portable propane firepit. It has the extra bonus of being allowed in places where open fires are not permitted.
Whether you choose a wood fire or propane firepit, gathering around the flames with friends and family sharing stories is another element that feeds a sense of wellness and contentment. Feeling hygge yet?!
My last note is don’t overthink it. You probably have a good handle on what makes you feel content and happy. Go with that – and enjoy your RV adventure creating feelings, experiences, and memories.
That’s hygge.
That’s contentment.
